American scientist J Robert Oppenheimer rarely strayed from wearing a suit and tie. It was the straight-and-narrow sort of stuff you'd expect from a guy who made the atomic bomb and pretty much kept to himself in a bunker. He didn't do big fits. Just big bombs. But Cillian Murphy, the Irish actor who has taken on the role in Christopher Nolan's upcoming epic, made the explosive case that even science can be a little bit sexy.
Murphy (before staging a mass walkout with the rest of his cast in solidarity with the striking writers in America) attended the London premiere, and he gave. It wasn't the Murphy we knew. While there was tailoring and classics, there was also a very sheer shirt by way of Saint Laurent: the leading light when it comes to subtle but steamy elegance. As a brand that knows its way around absurdly good coats, it's struck a fine balance between wearable and sexy that a lot of guys have taken to in recent years, including (but not limited to) Rami Malek, Lil Dre, Evan Mock, and now, Murphy too.
Murphy's look is also in keeping with a wider sex drive happening in menswear right now. Manu RĂos, another Saint Laurent fan, is an advocate for sheer shirts, as is his co-star Jason Fernandez (see their double-act Cannes Film Festival appearance earlier this year). Evan Mock, another bright young thing in the acting industry, took fashion week by storm in January when he battled Paris' bitter climes in a see-through shirt.
But as Murphy has proven, it ain't just the young set of Hollywood heartthrobs that can get down with sexy. Mad scientists can do it too.
