Florence Pugh proudly champions experimental looks on the red carpet — be it the red peplum dress and matching veiled cowboy hat from Robert Wun’s debut couture collection that she wore to the Critics’ Circle Awards, or the fluttering tangerine Nina Ricci gown from Harris Reed’s debut for the house she chose for the BAFTAs.
Pugh frequently turns to Pierpaolo Piccioli for head-turning Valentino creations, often selecting his most playful looks. Case in point: the preppy-meets-peekaboo ensemble she wore for the screening of A Good Person in New York on 20 March, comprised of a silk cady gown featuring a cheeky open back and floor-sweeping maxi skirt from the house’s Pre-Fall 2023 collection.
Coming shortly after the autumn/winter 2023 collections, where ties cropped up at Alexander McQueen and David Koma, among others, Pugh’s custom look incorporated a skinny tie that peeped from beneath the collar of her dress, offering a contemporary spin on the staid old office accessory. Should the actor wish to wear another fresh take on ties, there were plenty to choose from in Pierpaolo’s autumn/winter 2023 Valentino collection, aptly named “Black Tie”, where they were styled with shirting, sheer blouses and dresses.
“I always think about what Valentino was about – it was about the idea of lifestyle, the perfect life, success,” Piccioli told Vogue of his showcase. “I think, now what I’m doing is more switched to the idea of the lifestyle of community, our community, communities that are about the sort of gang of kids who are saying, look, we can wear the same sort of clothes, but giving them their personality with that.” He’s found the perfect muse for his new vision.
