Data science isn’t particularly sexy, but it’s more important than ever - TechRepublic

Data scientists can create impressive results for their organizations but the work to get there is anything but sexy.

Ten years ago Harvard Business Review named data scientists as having the “sexiest job of the 21st century.” This month they said it’s “still the sexiest job” of this century. I guess that depends on one’s view of sexy.

Sure, it’s difficult to source data science talent, given a scarcity of supply. There are strategies for improving this, like looking to adjacent job functions to upskill them. But while this may fix the overall supply problem, it won’t solve the persistent problem of churn. Why would data scientists quit their richly paid jobs, you ask? Let me count the ways.

Data science is drudge work

“While many believe data science is all about using machine learning algorithms to build models and make business impact, data cleaning is also an essential part of being a data scientist,” wrote Vicky Yu.

Not only is data cleansing an essential part of data science, it’s actually where data scientists spend as much as 80% of their time. It has ever been thus. As Mike Driscoll described in 2009, such “data munging” is a “painful process of cleaning, parsing and proofing one’s data.” Super sexy!

Now add to that drudgery the very real likelihood that enterprises, as excited as they are to jump into data science, many lack “a suitable infrastructure in place to start getting value out of AI,” as Jonny Brooks has articulated:

The data scientist likely came in to write smart machine learning algorithms to drive insight but can’t do this because their first job is to sort out the data infrastructure and/or create analytic reports. In contrast, the company only wanted a chart that they could present in their board meeting each day. The company then gets frustrated because they don’t see value being driven quickly enough and all of this leads to the data scientist being unhappy in their role.

As I have written before: “Data scientists join a company to change the world through data, but quit when they realize they’re merely taking out the data garbage.” The problem is that the grass isn’t any greener at another company — or, otherwise put, the trash is just as… trashy. Which wouldn’t be so bad if the data scientist’s employers paid attention to their work.

The problem of ignored work

As the HBR authors note: “Many organizations don’t have data-driven cultures and don’t take advantage of the insights provided by data scientists.”

At least they’re paid well, right? Well… “Being hired and paid well doesn’t mean that data scientists will be able to make a difference for their employers,” the HBR authors said. “As a result, many are frustrated, leading to high turnover.”

Even as machine learning and other components of data science have gotten more sophisticated, it’s still the case that executives will sidestep data in favor of intuition. Years ago, enterprise executives were adamant that they were data-driven, but they would reanalyze data if it didn’t match intuition. Such studies are legion. We love data when it confirms our preconceived notions, but not so much when it doesn’t.

None of which is to suggest that data science is failing. Despite these issues, demand for data science, and data scientists, remains strong. But it’s probably too soon to claim that data scientist is a “sexy” job. Increasingly essential, yes. But sexy? I guess that’s in the eye of the beholder.

See Alexandra Daddario Change Into Three Outfits In Sexy Video - Giant Freakin Robot

It’s no secret that along with an incredible talent for acting, Alexandra Daddario of Percy Jackson fame is blessed with sex appeal. She often shows off both her nose for fashion and her killer looks on social media, and this week she gave a little more with a new video. In the new post she dresses in not one, not two, but three sexy outfits.

Posted to her official Instagram account, the new video is part of a paid partnership with Aerie clothing. The video has Alexandra Daddario leaving bed to pick her clothes out for the day. While in her bedroom she remains in her PJs, but in her mirror she changes between three different outfits each with a different, sexy and form-fitting top — one orange, one green, and one blue. While Alexandra Daddario may seem busier on Instagram than on the big or small screens these days, she hasn’t left acting behind. There isn’t an announced premiere date yet, but sometime this fall we’ll see her lead the new AMC series Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches, based on Rice’s popular Lives of the Mayfair Witches series of novels. Daddario plays Dr. Rowan Mayfair, a neurosurgeon who learns she comes from a long and powerful line of witches. Also attached to the series is Harry Hamlin (L.A. Law) as the Mayfair patriarch Cortland, Jack Huston as the mutant Lasher, Tongayi Chirisa (iZombie) as Ciprien, Beth Grant (Donnie Darko) as the cruel Carlotta, Jen Richards (Her Story) as Jojo, Annabeth Gish (Mystic Pizza) as the guilt-ridden Dierdre, and Erica Gimpel (God Friended Me) as Ellie.

It’s likely AMC is going to be throwing a lot behind the premiere of Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches. With The Walking Dead finally on its way out, the cable network is going to be looking its next big genre hit. Sure, there are plenty of Walking Dead spin-offs on the way like Isle of the Dead and Tales of the Walking Dead, but it remains to be seen whether any of those have legs for multiple seasons. Alexandra Daddario’s upcoming show, on the other hand, has the potential to become the network’s next big thing. Filled with the same kind of intrigue, violence, and sex you’d expect from an Anne Rice story, the Mayfair Witches could definitely have its mythology branch off into spin-offs. The first book of the series was 1990’s The Witching Hour, followed three years later with Lasher and the following year with Taltos. In fact, characters from the books cross over into Rice’s much more well known Vampire Chronicles.

Also expected out some time this year is the coming-of-age drama Wildflower. Directed by Matt Smukler (The Hiccup), with a story by Smukler and Jana Savage (#RealityHigh), the film is based on Smukler’s own family. According to Deadline, the film will be a dark comedy about growing up with a parent who suffers from an intellectual disability. Daddario will be part of an impressive ensemble cast that includes Jean Smart (Hacks), Kiernan Shipka (Mad Men), Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook), Charlie Plummer (Lean on Pete), Brad Garrett (Everybody Loves Raymond), Reid Scott (Veep), Erika Alexander (Get Out), Chris Mulkey (Whiplash), and more.

See Ana De Armas In A Sexy Chrome Gown - Giant Freakin Robot

In the last several years, Ana de Armas has exploded from an especially bright newcomer to Hollywood into one of the biggest stars in the world. Along the way, she has established a reputation as one of the most stylish actors in the world, posing in absolutely gorgeous outfits on both red carpets and social media. Of course, it probably helps that Ana de Armas is one of the most beautiful women in the world and the outfits themselves are getting a real boost by being draped over her. Take these pictures, for example: 

Ana de Armas posted several images of herself attending the London premiere of her new movie The Gray Man on Instagram, and she is looking absolutely astounding. In the first image, she is immaculately posed, gazing at the camera with a dreamy look. Ana de Armas is dressed in a metallic silver Louis Vuitton gown; she has tagged the legendary fashion house in the picture, along with longtime creative designer Nicolas Ghesquière and wardrobe stylist Samantha McMillen. The bodice of the dress is held up with thin spaghetti straps and patterned with tiny symmetrical black dots. Her black hair is swept up and to her right, falling right to her bare shoulders, and she is wearing discreet silver earrings. 

The second image of the set shows Ana de Armas in a more playfully dramatic pose, now shot in a three-quarter shot. This reveals her silver chrome gown to be cinched at the waist with a black belt punched through with cutout rings. Ana de Armas has also tagged Halley Brisker in the photos as her hairstylist, and French makeup artist Mélanie Inglessis as applying her Estée Lauder. 

The third and final picture shows Ana de Armas standing with her co-stars from The Gray Man. The full chrome gown is now able to be seen; the skirt of the dress has a casually elegant drape and is patterned in a darker silver than the bodice. On her left is Chris Evans, the former Captain America of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and antagonist of the much anticipated Netflix movie. On Ana de Armas’ immediate right stands Ryan Gosling, star of internet boyfriend memes and the titular protagonist of The Gray Man. Further to the right is Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page. All three men are dressed stylishly, but as one might expect, none of them can hope to hold a candle to Ana de Armas. 

The Gray Man was directed by Anthony and Joe Russo (past and perhaps future Marvel Studios directors) and is adapted from a spy thriller novel by Mark Greaney. The Netflix production is intended to be the start of a franchise focusing on Ryan Gosling’s deadly mercenary; considering that it is apparently the most expensive film the streaming platform has ever made, they have a lot riding on it. Bringing in gorgeous and talented actors like Ana de Armas and her three pictured co-stars will hopefully guarantee it does have sequels.

The disputed rocks that led to Sexy Pizza’s closure in Capitol Hill may have to move as well - The Denver Post

Pizza and public policy aren’t mixing well in Capitol Hill where the owners of neighborhood staple Sexy Pizza say their landlord has decided not to renew their lease as the result of a disagreement over a pile of rocks that the building’s ownership company placed out front.

And while Sexy Pizza will close on July 24 (as it searches for a new location nearby), the rocks may have to go as well as the city of Denver said they are blocking the public right-of-way.

The large rocks first appeared in March, prompting Kayvan Khalatbari, who co-founded Sexy Pizza, at 1018 E. 11th Ave. in 2008, to comment on Facebook about how the restaurant hadn’t been notified and would never have agreed to the rocks if it had been given a choice.

Some property owners in Capitol Hill and other parts of the city have installed similar rocks, as well as fencing, to prevent homeless people from setting up tent encampments.

The rocks at Sexy Pizza blocked access to a bike rack, rendering it “unusable,” Khalatbari said, and added they also obstructed an area where delivery drivers usually parked. “It was really detrimental to our business.” In addition, Khalatbari, who was once homeless himself, has been an advocate for people living on the streets and doesn’t believe the rocks are a good solution.

In fact, a few years ago, he tried to partner with the nonprofit Homeless Out Loud to have lockers built outside Sexy Pizza for homeless people to use to safely store their belongings. But he said the building’s landlord, Katherine Diane MacRossie, denied his effort to get a city permit to have the lockers installed.

After Khalatbari spoke to Denverite about the rocks, he said that MacRossie, a managing partner for Ogden Investment Company, LLP, which owns the building, emailed him and told him she wouldn’t be renewing Sexy Pizza’s lease, which expires July 24.

Khalatbari said he asked MacRossie if Sexy Pizza could transition to a month-to-month lease while it looked for a new location — a process he said could take up to a year — and even offered to pay double the rent. But MacRossie declined, saying, “We are not interested in your offer and have a team scheduled to begin working in August,” according to a text message thread between the two that Khalatbari provided to the Denver Post.

MacRossie didn’t respond to multiple requests for comment on this story.

It turns out that some of the rocks don’t comply with city public right-of-way regulations, according to Nancy Kuhn, communications director of Denver Public Works.

After a Denver Post inquiry, the city’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure conducted an investigation and requested the rocks adjacent to the curb line be either removed or pulled back to improve pedestrian access and allow people parking there to open their car doors.

“We’re doing this in support of safety and mobility and our general placement criteria for raised encroachments in the right of way,” Kuhn told The Denver Post.

Kuhn added that the city had also recently asked a property owner at 16th and Sherman streets to move some rocks off the curb line so people could open their car doors. In addition, a May 2022 report by Rocky Mountain PBS found 19 instances of illegal mesh fencing installed in public rights of way to deter homeless camping in Capitol Hill.

As it searches for a new location, Sexy Pizza will operate out of a ghost kitchen, CloudKitchens at 810 Vallejo St. in the Lincoln Park neighborhood. Khalatbari says he hopes to find a spot within a mile of the original location, but is having trouble doing so.

“I suppose time will tell how this affects our business and whether it will be sustainable to keep everyone on staff a month from now, three months from now, a year from now,” Khalatbari said in an email to The Denver Post.

“We’re ready and willing to dig into the piggybank to keep folks employed as long as possible. Hopefully business continues at levels from before/increases for delivery and carryout, and this transition plan works out until we find that next more permanent home,” he added.

Stranger Things Season 4 has officially been released, and naturally, one of everyone’s favorite characters happens to be Robin. She is portrayed by Maya Hawke. And in case you didn’t know, she is the daughter of famed actors Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman. What a pair to learn the game of acting from. On top of being a great actor in her own right, the young woman is also a fantastic singer. She has just released the music video for “Thérèse” off her upcoming album, Moss. You can see the music video below. NSFW warning. There is a ton of nudity in the video, so be careful when viewing the video:

We are not entirely sure about the context of the music video, but it appears to be some social commentary about the nature of sexuality and having to hide from it. It’s quite a beautiful song, and Maya Hawke sings beautifully in the video. She always bears it all as she is marched through a field in handcuffs. Music videos have become quite artsy these days. New music videos are often more like short films, complete with far more adult themes than they used to have. That is certainly the case for the above video.

Moss is set to premiere on September 23rd, and fans can pre-order the album and pre-save it on Spotify right now. This is a much different look at Maya Hawke, apart from her time on Stranger Things. She became one of the most beloved characters on the show since she appeared in the third season. Even in the fourth season, Hawke has shown that she can still carry a scene, as the moments with her and Vickie have been quite fantastic. The rumor is that Vickie is going to have more of a substantial part in the fifth season.

Maya Hawke surprisingly became a singer in 2019. Well, that’s to say that she released her first two singles that year, “To Love a Boy” and “Stay Open.” In 2020, she released another single called “By Myself.” She then announced her debut album, Blush. Her second single off that album was titled “Coverage” and the music video for the single was directed by none other than Ethan Hawke. Instead of releasing her album as scheduled in June of 2020, Maya delayed the release amid the height of the Black Lives Matters protests. She stated, “I feel like this is not a time for self-promotion. It is a time for activation, education, and self-examination” Blush would be released in August of 2020 instead.

Now, Maya Hawke has released the above single to usher in her sophomore album, Moss. With Stranger Things likely taking a lengthy break, the actress is also primed to take on a big role in the new Wes Anderson film, Asteroid City. She joins massive actors like Tom Hanks, Margot Robbie, Scarlet Johansson, and Bryan Cranston. She is also set to star alongside Bradley Cooper in the Leonard Bernstein biopic, Maestro. For now, fans can see a new side of Hawke in the above video. Just be careful where you watch it.

Here she’s pulling double-duty, in that she’s helping to sell her personal line of swimwear through Elizabeth Hurley Beach and there’s also a team-up with Clinique as well. As of this writing, Elizabeth Hurley’s Instagram post had garnered significant attention on the social media platform. It had more than 230K likes which isn’t all that big of a surprise considering the actress and model has more than 2.4 million followers over there. Her posts tend to have high engagement and it’s easy to see why. Hurley would appear to know where her bread is buttered with these posts. After all, it doesn’t look like she’s aged a day in the last couple of decades. How this is even possible genetically is anyone’s guess, but she’s clearly pulled it off.

And selling her swim style on Instagram has clearly helped Elizabeth Hurley as well. Her swimwear collection includes all manner of offerings and it isn’t just for adults either. There are kid’s swimsuits on there as well. It’s a massive business built on the back of Hurley still being a stunner at age 57. From that standpoint, she picked the right lane outside of acting.

On the acting front, Elizabeth Hurley has some movies coming out over the next year plus. Welcome to Georgia has already completed filming and she’ll star as a young, single grandmother who is tasked with helping to raise her grandson when both parents’ careers take off at the same time. And then there is The Piper which will have her playing a teacher and raising a young daughter who’s trying to solve a local mystery. And finally, Christmas in the Caribbean will offer a sunnier look at the holiday than we might be used to seeing. So it’s all working for Elizabeth Hurley these days with the Instagram feed keeping fans coming back. It’s easy to see why this is the case.

Stranger Things actor shocked at how 'sexy' fans think Vecna is - indy100

Vecna thirst tweets by fans have left Stranger Things' Jamie Campbell Bower rather taken aback - particularly as he's not only the villain - but hideous.

The actor, who plays Vecna (and his other forms), sat down with Netflix to play 'Scene Stealers'.

'Am I the only one who thinks Vecna is hot?' one user wrote, alongside a clip of him licking the creature.

"That man just licked my nasal cavity!" Jamie responded. "We're very grateful for the fact you think V-Man's sexy...but next time, let me know before you lick my nostrils."
